Most ice cave photos you see online are from Vatnajökull, Iceland's largest ice cap, in the middle of winter. The Katla ice cave, near Vík, looks different: smaller, darker, and striped with black volcanic ash. It is also open all year, much closer to Reykjavík, and easier to fit into a south coast trip.
Below: what each cave is like, when you can visit, how far each is, what the tours cost, and a simple way to choose.
The quick answer
Choose Katla if you travel from April to October, have only a day or two on the south coast, or like the drama of black ash in blue ice: it is open all year, about 2.5 hours from Reykjavík, and tours from Vík cost $177 to $292. Choose Vatnajökull if you visit roughly November to March and are going as far as Jökulsárlón, about 2.5 hours beyond Vík: its natural caves are clear and blue, but only in winter.

What is the difference between the Katla and Vatnajökull ice caves?
Katla is a dark, ash-striped cave at the snout of Kötlujökull, on Mýrdalsjökull, open all year; Vatnajökull's natural caves are clear blue ice that form and can be visited only in winter.
The two compared, from operator and official sources:

| Look | Blue ice with black ash stripes, smaller and darker | Clear, bright blue ice |
| Season | All year | Roughly October or November to March or April |
| From Reykjavík | About 2.5 hours' drive to Vík | About 2.5 hours further east than Vík |
| Tour time | About 3 hours from Vík | About 3 hours from Jökulsárlón |
| Price | $177 to $292 | About $195 (Ice Explorers) |
| Minimum age | 6 or 8, by operator | 7 (Ice Explorers) |
Why is the Katla ice cave black?
The black stripes are volcanic ash from past eruptions, trapped in the glacier in layers with the blue ice; Icelanders call these 'black ice' caves.
Katla is one of Iceland's most active volcanoes, with at least 20 eruptions since settlement, and each one dusted the ice cap with ash. The cave is not inside the volcano: Katla's caldera lies under hundreds of metres of ice up on the ice cap, while the cave sits at the edge of the glacier. Guests report it is small but well worth it; the ash also covers the surface of the glacier, which slows the melt and is part of why the cave can be visited in summer.

Not the natural blue caves: they are a winter thing, roughly from October or November to March or April, because summer meltwater makes them unsafe. Katla is one of very few Icelandic ice caves you can visit in summer.
Ice Explorers, which runs a Vatnajökull blue ice cave tour from Jökulsárlón, calls its cave 'the winter phenomenon'. So in summer the choice makes itself. More on the season in the Katla ice cave in summer.

Is the Katla ice cave as blue as the photos?
Usually not. The famous crystal blue photos are from Vatnajökull in winter; the Katla cave is darker, with blue ice between thick black bands of ash.
Operators also say their photos are not real time: a Katla cave may be a tunnel, an arch or a wide opening, and it changes week to week with melt, rain and the movement of the ice. Go expecting a raw, dramatic black and blue cave, and a wild ride across the black sands to reach it, and you will not be disappointed.

How far is each ice cave from Reykjavík?
Vík, the base for Katla, is about 180 to 190 km from Reykjavík, about 2.5 hours on Route 1. Jökulsárlón, the base for Vatnajökull caves, is about 2.5 hours further east.
That makes Katla a realistic day trip from Reykjavík, with a 10 to 12 hour day, while Vatnajökull caves really need a night or two on the south coast. Both day tours from Reykjavík to Katla stop at Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss; the Arctic Adventures day trip costs $279. See the Katla ice cave from Reykjavík for the options.
